Jax is our favorite place to go every other Friday night! The food, atmosphere and staff are the epitome of what excellence is. Through our regular visits we have had the pleasure of Sam taking care of us and request his section each tiime. He's friendly attentive and by far compliments the entire experience. Everything on the menu is awesome. The atmosphere is wonderful. The staff is professional and truly takes great care of the customers. Thank you Jax and Sam!! See you all very soon! Polite service, pleasant atmosphere. The happy hour mussels were abnormally large and caked with sand. There was sand crunching in my mouth the day after. It's Colorado, but if the mussels are bad take them off the menu. The time before that I had the scallops. There were three abrasively over seasoned and slightly overcooked scallops atop an unnecessarily cluttered assortment of mirepoix and some sort of bean. The squash puree was an unwelcome additional layer of flavor which was exaggerated by its unfortunate waste-brown color. I would have much preferred a classic white wine, butter, lemon...dill (if you need to go crazy). Even though it was about a month ago, I still remember that sad looking dress on a would-have-been-delicious bivalve mollusk.

Our first visit to Jax. Our food was delicious and so was our waiter Alfredo. Two in our party had the potato crusted salmon with grilled beets and buttermilk crusted I had the Buttermilk battered duck confi, OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS!! A great time was had by all!

My gf and I went here for dinner tonight and left very disappointed. No one even approached us, despite making eye contact with several serves... we left after waiting for 15 min and went down the street to Fish instead!

Great food, fresh with great specials. Get there before 6pm for happy hour. Wine Wednesdays are 50% off any bottle under $50 and $25 off any bottle over $50. The oysters were fresh and shrimp grits were good too. Service was excellent and food came out quickly.

So happy to say the mussels are back!!! We went in tonight for a redemption dinner because we're moving away and wanted one last delicious meal. The mussels were small, sweet, and NOT sandy. Just the way I like them. They also switched back to their grilled bread instead of fries ! So good!! We also tried the New Orleans breakfast with fried catfish, pancake, and delicious dipping sauce! As well as the gumbo. Definitely don't want to miss this place, go there tonight!!

I took two friends from out of town here and was not disappointed, my server Emily went above and beyond her call of duty. Always on point, extremely polite, and kept our party feeling at home. We ordered two appetizers, the crab cakes and the calamari. Both were exceptional. The crab cakes were the best I've had anywhere. The calamari wasn't tough (this can be a problem for some places you see?), and was done expertly. Our entrées were all the same (the crab duo) and everyone exclaimed on how wonderful it was. I'll definitely go to jax again.

We loved this place. It was one of the first restaurants we had been to in the city. The wait staff is really nice and very accommodating. They gave us some great recommendations and hung out with our table to tell us about the town. The food was amazing. The seafood was fresh and delicious. We had a really good time sitting by the fish tank. We will definitely be back.

Amazing dinner. Well worth the dollars. We had the 1/2lb peel shrimp that was on special for the appetizer. Then we had half a wedge and half a green salad with strawberries. Delicious! Then moved onto the ahi tuna and the lobster sandwich! Everything was cooked to perfection and great taste! We booked on opentable in advance and were seated at the best place in the house next to the kitchen!

Great seafood! Loved the oysters! Was a little loud for my taste but I would still go back for the food!!!

Great seafood happy hour and overall one of the best seafood restaurants in the area I love Jax for their happy hour with booth food and drink specials. Their oysters are always fresh and the bartenders are quick, efficient and friendly. I wish there were more variety in the types of fish offered but what they have are a great value.

Jax has fantastic seafood and excellent service too boot. I've waited tables and been to plenty of different restaurants in town. Emily is my favorite waitress bar none. She knows the correct balance between being there when you need her and giving you the space to enjoy your evening. Would recommend Jax to anyone.

Great place for happy hour! We have been visiting Jax in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins for years. This review is solely for the FoCo location. I honestly prefer the happy hour "tapas" menu (see items below) to their full service menu (Scallops, Lobster Roll, Ahi Tuna = 2 thumbs down). Dinner menu items have been really disappointing 100% of the time this summer. We have dined during Happy Hour (total of 4x this Summer). Our collective experiences this summer over multiple visits that included myself, my sweetie, my son and my mom. They re-style their menu with the seasons and I have to say except for the Ahi Poke and Calamari w/Chile Mojo and Lime Aioli, this summer's menu has been our least favorite Jax Menu ever. The Asian theme just misses the mark this Summer. We have never asked for our money back but made polite (very quiet) recommendations to our servers. Each time, our servers thanked us for the feedback but stated that the chefs were confrontational and don't accept constructive criticism. Really? The manager needs to get on this. There are plenty of talented chefs looking for work at a successful restaurant. Hire some that accept feedback from the diners. If you don't have happy diners, you don't have a successful restaurant. If it doesn't work, change it! Shame on them! DON'T MISS: 1. Smoked Chicken & Crawfish Gumbo. I didn't prefer this but my hubs and son LOVED it. Note that it is the farthest thing from true southern gumbo you can imagine. Too thick and "smoked" for me. I don't see it on the Happy Hour Menu any longer but they had some frites smothered with the Gumbo that my son and the hubs couldn't get enough of. They ordered it 3 times in one sitting :) 2. Calamari w/mango-chile mojo, lime aioli. Always great! Light, tender calamari. I don't even care for aioli and loved this one. It also had fried cuttlefish in it which is butter tender and amazing! I don't know why they don't disclose this on the menu description. People would love to know this "secret" ingredient! It is THE BOMB! 3. Baby Iceberg Wedge: Cold, refreshing and delish! 4. Ahi Poke. I never, ever, never miss this one!!! No matter how they restyle this, they get this one right every time!. It is stunningly delish. The current one w/miso aioli, pea shoots, benne seeds, white shoyu nam pla, wasabi peas is off the charts. Flavors are spot on! I literally order 3 of these as an entrée! 5. Blackened Pork Belly. Great pork belly and horrid cornbread on 2 occasions. Both times we ordered it, the cornbread was so thick it stuck to the inside of your mouth and took an entire drink to swallow it down. 6. Oysters are a great buy at happy hour! 7. Hush puppies never disappoint! 8. S'mores Torte. Share this! It is fab! AVOID: 1. Jax Caesar Salad. I have had better Ceasar's that I rip the celophane off from the grocery store. It's that bad. Uninspired. And I have given it 3 tries. Served hot all 3 times. Really horrible. They need to work on this one! 2. Lobster roll. This was uber bland on stale bread. I literally picked out the lobster and it still wasn't a win. I shared this with my mom who was visiting from out of town. She flat out refused to eat it, it was so bad. She opted for ordering another Poke instead. Blech! It is underseasoned and underwhelming. Total waste of money! 2. Truffled Fried Potatoes. Oh, how I wanted to love these. Simply didn't. Too truffled! They overwhelmingly had too much truffle oil which usually isn't even from real truffles, it is flavored. They should just nix this from the menu if they can't figure out the balance. 3. Cast Iron Scallops. I wanted to be in love with this dish. Notwithstanding the bad choice in seasoning (two samplings: 1 was Asian inspired and the 2nd was Indian inspired. Both cooked poorly and bad flavor profiles). Both time they had no sear whatsoever and were "steamed", pale and tough. If they could guarantee sear and have a great seasoning profile, maybe. Otherwise, it is an utter waste of $32 bucks. 4. Cornbread: See 5 above.

Very tasty oysters, main dishes, and dessert. We had a wide sampling of east and west coast oysters, plus a KimChi flavored variety. The oyster prep chef was very friendly and spot on in his recommendations. The shrimp and andouille sausage po'boy was delicious and one of the more reasonably priced items on the menu. Came with well flavored cole slaw and shoestring fries.

Yet another fantastic experience at Jax. Tonight was a FoCo Great Plates occasion of which my friend and I both indulged. I started off with the lobster bisque and hush puppies followed by the grilled catfish with blistered tomatoes and corn pudding and ended with the key lime custard. The bisque was smooth and creamy with just enough lobster flavor. The hush puppies were delicious and I could have eaten oh so many more. The catfish was good but the star of that plate was the corn pudding. Sweet yet savory, creamy yet textured, this was worth eating alone. The red pepper consommé didn't do much for me. Oh I would be remiss to not mention that we got the six oyster Yelp check in offer. I've never been a huge oyster fan but that's because I haven't been eating them the right way. Tonight turned my oyster opinion around! Libations were the grapefruit ginger sling which was another brilliant example of their infused vodka talents and a decaf coffee served the only way coffee should be served - French press. And last but certainly not least was the mind blowing key lime custard with graham cracker cookies. Crunchy cookie with a hit of tart key lime pudding. Home run Jax! The service was wonderful as usual. My friend and I had a lot of catching up to do, so it was with a guilty realization that we had taken over two hours at our table. The waitress was wonderful the whole time!

I like how Jax is always trying new dishes and working with the local farms. It is fun to see what they are doing!

Fantastic decor and food. We ordered the oysters and could have asked for any better, also the burger there is fantastic.

Food = 4 (gumbo was a little heavy and gravy like... I loved the cornbread with honey and jalapenos = the best old new thang I've tasted in forever) Price = 4 (in line) Experience = 4 (nice subtle attention..) I loved the great aquariums. Best I've seen lately.

It had been 3 years since I was here, and I was slightly disappointed in the menu options, everything was hot and I wanted something colder. I settled on the lobster salad sandwich was happily very good! There was a great slaw and shoestring fries. My boyfriend also endjoyed the fish burger slider he got, along with the Colorado catfish dish. They also gave us some "free" shrimp - but they were too spicy for me, as was most of the food I got (sliders, oyster, shrimp). Our waiter was great and the service was good - food came out in good fashion and we entertained ourselves by drawing on the table.

Excellent food and service. Dinner was delicious albeit disappointingly small portions. One of the better happy hours with nice cocktails and grub. One of my favorites overall.

We enjoy every visit. Every waitperson has been a joy. The food is consistent. Best place for fresh oysters on the half she'll. Well worth the hour and 20 minutes to get here. The parking is a challenge-- but that is College on a Friday night! Plan ahead--did I mention happy hour oysters. Check it out.

Good wine list. Best scallops I've ever had. Tried the donuts for dessert at our server's recommendation and they were great. French press coffee with dessert was a treat. Would totally fine here again. Excellent service for our table of 6! Every course from appetizers to dessert was flavorful and interesting and good.

Recently went back for another try. I must say if you have the means to buy the higher priced ticket items, they are worth it. We started w the oysters, got the ones recommended by the staff, very yummy and flavorful. Good suggestion. The Monchong was wonderful. Fresh. Good portion. The carrot purée was amazing. The Manila Clam Tagliatelle had a great broth, be sure they bring out some bread w it so you can sop up some broth. They forgot to do that with us :( The staff has always been great, friendly, knowledgable, this visit was no exception. Ask them for recommendations, drinks, apps, entrees, whatever, they know their stuff. Wish I could afford this place more often.

Overall I enjoy eating at Jax. I think it's fair to say that I have had several great experiences, with one poor experience. When we had a bad experience, the manager was quick to reimburse us for the inconvenience and provided a credit for the next visit. That's what I would expect and is exactly the type of response that will keep me coming back! I have had excellent seafood dishes there, they have a great atmosphere, great staff and a good drink selection. If you are looking for a fun place for seafood, I would recommend Jax! I do however, think it's slightly over priced, considering the portion size. But I mark that up to the area, it is land locked Colorado after all... Oh and don't forget to Check-in for your free oysters!

  • AJ J.

Very very good food. The best in northern Colorado. The biggest problem is the noise level. It was hard to hear my wife. Also you seem to be packed in like sardines. They have a great wine list and the food was limited to what seems like a few things but they have a new menu all the time depending on what they can get fresh.

Jax is one of the only seafood restaurants in Fort Collins so it doesn't have to be that great to thrive. The bartender was very quick and efficient serving food and drinks, however the drink pours seemed very light. I didn't feel like I got my full 1.5oz in my drink. And at $6 per drink it's a bit irritating. Next time I'll just have beer. We ordered some oysters which came out nice and some gumbo which was bland and mediocre at best. I'll try it again, but $25 for a piece of fish is a bit wild. Moving here from Florida I guess I was spoiled.

Great food with exceptional service. Atmosphere is nice, perfect for any occasion. If you're looking to treat youself (or someone else) go all out, it's worth it. Their happy hour is fantastic (and all day on Monday). Thanks Josh and management for making a Tuesday night a memorable evening.

I've only been here once but my meal was excellent! It's expensive so be prepared. The dessert menu is boring so I didn't try anything. I'll go again.

Great food and experience! Split the calamari and lobster sandwich with my honey and both hit the spot! Staff was very helpful and pleasant. Even totaled up my tab with $3 extra in their favor and the staff corrected it instead of pocketing.

disappointed to say the least.I went there and took my boyfriend for his birthday dinner and spent close to $200 and honestly felt like it was a rip off. The food wasn't as great as other jax's locations in Colorado.I wouldn't waste money going there again

I was sadly disappointed with this restaurant. After reading all the great reviews, we were excited to give this place a try. I honestly have no idea why this place is 1. priced this high (let me also preface this review with saying that I have no problem spending $$ on a nice meal - when it's worth it!) and 2. why it has gotten such great reviews. To start, the decor of this place looks like a beachfront grill, not a $25-$30 / plate establishment. First walking in, the place reeked of fish - despite it being a fish house, no restaurant should actually smell like fish. VERY off-putting. The service was pretty lousy and the food was marginal at best. I got the ahi entree, it was ok - needed more flavor. And my boyfriend got the halibut, which was supposed to be killer - eh not so much. We did like the ahi tuna appetizer and truffled potatoes though. We were not pleased to be spending over $100 on this meal and will definitely not be going back.

  • Anthony S.

I know the food is amazing I've been numerous times but have you ever walked into a restaurant and been told there's a hour and a half wait and you look around and there twenty "open" tables disappointing for sure

  • Jessalyn G.

Blah, man. I wanted so much more from this place. Let's talk about food. My shrimp po'boy was disappointing. The sausage in the sandwich was terrible and though my sandwich had plenty of shrimp my boyfriends had very few. I found the coleslaw tasteless and the chips that came with were over salted and burnt. For $22 I would at least hope for unburnt chips. We also got the Calamari which was just average. I see all these other reviews and it makes me sad. I wish my experience would have been as awesome as all these other reviews sound. Also this place is expensive, for $100, I would have rather eaten almost anywhere else in town. Plus, our waitress frankly sucked well really, it all sucked. The only things that didn't suck was that salt water fish tank and the local draft beer.

I've been to Jax a couple of times now, and I've LOVED it every single time. My husband and I moved to Colorado from Georgia, so we've been missing fresh seafood. We were even a little skeptical trying Jax the first time but were impressed with everything -- from the decor and ambience to the service and the food itself. Actually, our first time to Jax was for my birthday dinner, and I quickly noticed they had some kimchi on the menu and decided to try one of their specialty oysters: kimchi + ginger soy oyster. I asked the server where they get the kimchi from, and he informed me that the chefs make it themselves! I was so impressed. Next thing I knew, one of the chefs came out to meet us, and we had a lovely conversation with him. And then about 5 minutes after that, he brought out a little to go container with some of the kimchi for us to take home! I was so touched. Their drinks, fresh oysters, lobster sandwich, shrimp andouille po' boy, happy hour menu... Everything is delicious!

Been here twice. The first time it was good, good service, food wasn't bad at all, a little overpriced. The second and last time I went, I will never return unless I have to. Hours on the toilet and the two of us ended up with food poisoning doesn't make for any fun early morning wake up. Thanks for the terribly bad food Jax. I wish I could add a helpful photo of the aftermath but I don't think anyone would like that.

Came in on a pro recommendation, esp wanting to support a business that "pays it forward" and supports local community/charitable programs. Of course I wanted to support them! Ate at the bar area, Tuesday night. Bartender was friendly and attentive. Tom Kha Mussels, truffled potatoes, and local veg. Heavenly. Great crowd, everyone casual, familes, couples, singles. The bartender is a highly skilled mixologist and just overhearing him discuss with the team, knows his products, origins etc. Great to just watch him work as well. I highly recommend this business, the food and service are great and intent to be + is there also.

I will never eat here again, which is sad because this used to be one of my favorite restaurants. The food has gone way downhill, and the service is snotty. We just went for dinner and started with the mussels. The sauce has gone downhill and they now just dump fries on top of them instead of serving it with grilled bread which is gross. We didn't finish them which the server seemed put out by. Then our entrees came and I'm sorry, but mine was just gross (remember, this used to be my favorite restaurant!) I took one bite and pushed it away. The server came and said "didn't like it?" and walked off kind of in a huff - didn't even ask me if I wanted something else. Then a few minutes later she came out and without even looking at me asked my husband if she could box up my food for him because it was such a shame it was being wasted. Just rude and insulting and I left hungry. I tried to talk to a manager about it and her only response was "well no one else complains about her." We will not be back.

Jax was recommended to me by someone so decided to try it out. Was overall really good. They have good food and awesome drinks when it comes to some of their mixes. Swordfish was good and also had a special that was something like a seafood stew. Stew was very good also. The portions are smaller and the price is high but everything was well prepared. Best time to visit is probably Monday when they have happy hour all night long and also dollar oysters. They have several different types of oysters to choose from. Do recommend it.....

First time eating here at Jax. Tried all of the east coast varieties of oysters, as well as west coast Kumamoto variety. They were all good and each types were different. I preferred the Stingray and Kumamoto ones. Main course consisted of the crab trio (king, snow, and dungeness) paired with a bright, fruity chardonnay. The snow and dungeness crab was some of the best I've had and I would recommend such. Yes you are paying good money for for the quality of seafood you're getting here. But let's get real...this is Fort Collins. You're not on the coast. Getting good seafood into this land locked area doesn't come cheap. If you want cheap crappy seafood go to your local "chain" restaurant known for their "lobster" smothered in greasy butter. For the price and value you are better off with the shellfish vs the regular fish plates, in my opinion. As for dessert, you can't go wrong with the German Chocolate creme brûlée or the cranberry cheesecake. Extra kudos to Kristi, the general manager, for ensuring we were taken care of on service.

We went to Jax for Christmas Eve and had a fabulous evening. The calamari appetizer was amazing and all 4 of us enjoyed our entrees. Our waitress made the evening even more enjoyable by offering us happy hour prices on drinks even though it was a bit past 6 p.m. The catfish dinner with cornbread was very tasty and the hazelnut torte is not to be missed. We will definitely be back!

My son and I recently had a great dinner at Jax in Fort Collins. Their Tomatillo / Goat Cheese oysters were scrumptious! We didn't know it at the time of our reservation but their Sunday special was their Fish & Chips- possibly the best I've ever had. It was also a treat to have them offer a different veggie- the Rainbow Swiss Chard was very good!

Jax has one of the best happy hours in town. They have an extensive and delicious food menu and their cocktails are perfect for summer sipping. I have NEVER been disappointed with their food or drinks. Ever. The staff, however, is hit or miss. I ventured in on the hottest afternoon of the century and was ready to relax with a spiked Strawberry Lemonade and some hush puppies. My eyes lit up as I looked around the room -- lots of empty seats! Oh the joy! That is until one of the three hostesses (why does there need to be three?) told me those tables couldn't be used for another 15 minutes -- the server was just too busy. I understand busy. I really do. So I asked if we could just sit there and wait rather than six of us awkwardly breathing down necks at the bar. Nope. We walked back and awkwardly stood and the server passed us. We asked if we could sit and wait and he smiled and said of course! He was ready whenever we were... Great server, not so great welcoming committee. They have little to do with the overall experience though so I won't let it stop me from going back.

Absolutely fresh and delicious happy hour menu, with knowledgable and attentive server. Calamari, mussels, oysters, shrimp were great. The biggest surprise were the wonderfully prepared fresh green vegetables. A real keeper.

This was our first time at this popular restaurant, and we'll probably return at some point in the near future. While the restaurant was somewhat crowded and very noisy, the service was excellent and the food and drinks were superb. My only complaint about the food was that the entrees are fairly small portions for the price, but I'd definitely return for happy hours (discounts) and possibly dinner in the future. We started with the calamari, which was really good, not the usual tough and chewy or overly greasy offering of most restaurants. Our cocktails were creative (try the lavender-infused gin or the cucumber and lemonade vodka drinks, or their homemade ginger beer if you, too, love gingery drinks) and refreshing. As for entrees, I had the steelhead trout, which was cooked very well and served with a couple of flavorful, delicious purees, as well as saffron-pickled eggs and greens. Fabulous, I ate everything except the fish skin, and I'd order this (new) entree again. My husband had the scallop and clam entree, and it was also well seasoned and enjoyable, though almost exclusively protein (no rice, potatoes, greens, so you may want a side salad or something). Our friend had the blackened catfish dish, and that was also perfectly seasoned and the fish cooked perfectly, and of the entrees, this was the most substantial serving size. We didn't opt for dessert (no chocolate selections, so not that tempting to me). All in all, excellent service, decent (though noisy) ambiance, well cooked and well seasoned fish; I'm impressed.

Met up with a group of 6 for a friend's birthday. The highlight of my evening was the "Lavender Crush", now that is one tasty cocktail! Starving, I ordered apps to share. The calamari was okay but the breading was a little thick and the calamari lost. The crab cake had good bites and then others where I swear it was a tuna flavor. It was a bit mushy and I wouldn't order it again. Could not decide between a few dishes but I've been on a shrimp and grits kick so I decided to order that appetizer as my meal. The grits were fried so it was a little different, more like polenta cakes, but still pretty tasty. We all shared bites of other dishes, the scallops were sweet and cooked right. The Barramundi fish dish was also well prepared and the one bite I had left me wanting more. With a few cocktails each, the total for two was $100. Probably doesn't have to be that spendy but that's half the fun of going out. WIll give it another shot but I'm a pretty big fan of that other fish place in town and it will be a hard sell to win me over.

Overall, fantastic food and service. The fried catfish with black-eyed peas and bacon collard greens was very good. The catfish was fresh, perfectly seasoned-- simply delicious. One of the best prepared catfish I've ever had. I wasn't too fond of the black-eyed peas, because I don't like black eyed peas in the first place-- not their fault. The collard greens was decent, but was a little bitter. My coworker absolutely loved her crab cake sandwich. I started with the lemon champagne steamed mussels. They were yummy, but not the best I've had. The sauce was a bit too tart for my taste. The bread that came with the appetizer was a bit hard. I had their strawberry lemonade vodka cocktail, which I enjoyed, but it could've been a tad bit sweeter. I did love the decor and the ambiance. This is a great place for a casual lunch or dinner. I had fun doodling at the table with the provided crayons and butcher paper. Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner there. I'm from Nebraska, but would be happy to stop by again when I'm in town next.

This place has it all. We started in the Bar where the bartender was great at recommending drinks, of which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We were then sat at two separate tables because of our large group. The wait staff was on top of it and with in 4 min they had our tables together. I can't say enough about the wait staff. They were amazing. We just happen to be in FT. Collins on a 4 day education retreat that was about customer services. This wait staff could have taught the class. They knew the menu and knew their wines. Never once was our water glasses empty and everything was so good that we asked the manager to come see us. He wanted to know if something was wrong. To the contrary everything was perfect and if you're in Ft Collins and you want great drinks. amazing Seafood and amazing services this is the place to go. BRAVO!

Ate here last night. There was a 30 minute wait, so my husband and I sat at the bar. We found the service to be very friendly, even though our waiter seemed to be a little inexperienced. My husband got happy hour oysters and I had a hamburger - he liked the oysters and I have to say that my bacon burger was delicious. Great atmosphere and friendly service. No complaints.

My wife and I went here for our anniversary. I drew a Happy Anniversary message to my wife on the paper table cloth with the table crayons. Our waiter saw the message and provided a nice desert on the house after our delicious meal. Most of the restaurants in Ft. Collins are mediocre at best. Now I can say we have found one that stands out. The smoked frog leg gumbo was fantastic! And my shrimp and grits was a close second with great flavors. My wife had the Colorado fillet of beef which was outstanding. Don't miss the cornbread.

Fort Collins' "Great Plates" event finally got me to the Ft. Collins Jax Fish House ... I'd been to the location in Boulder years ago and loved it, but honestly I'm getting too old and crotchety to want to venture so far for dinner. The ambiance at Jax is bright and lively -- fun if you're in the mood, maybe a bit noisy if you're not. The Great Plates menu included a choice of a flight of oysters or lobster bisque as an appetizer, mahi mahi or crab boil for the entree, and pecan pie or ice cream for dessert. I would have gotten the oysters if they were on the half shell, but there were actually three preparations (including a chicken-fried oyster, which was the one that put me off ordering them). The lobster bisque was fantastic, though -- it was not too heavy on the cream, had a great lobster flavor, and was garnished with a delicious shrimp & sourdough based stuffing. I had the crab boil for my entree, which wasn't anything special. I suppose the appeal of a real, Cajun boil is having a pot of crab, crawdads, potatoes, corn, sausage, etc. dumped out of a pot onto newspaper-covered picnic tables, so it loses something in the translation to a nice sit-down restaurant. I had a taste of my friend's mahi mahi -- the mole sauce was really tasty, so I'd say that's the way to go if you make it in for Great Plates (still going on through March 15th). I finished my meal off with the pecan pie -- it was a tiny serving, but great flavors. The Great Plates menu might not have been all I was hoping for, but it did get me in the door and has me intrigued enough that I'll likely be back to try the regular menu, or maybe to enjoy oyster happy hour ...

Dinner was yummy and I loved the outside seating. I ordered the Clam and bacon appetizer. I ordered it before when it was served with brussel sprouts and loved it. I didn't love it this time. The chili peppers overpowered the entire dish My husband ordered the burger and truffled frites. OMG, the burger is ONE of the BEST and I am a Texas girl who knows her BEEF! The truffled frites were pretty awesome too! Finally we had a great waiter, Juan was excellent!!! We work hard to have our children order politely and Juan treated our son like an adult and make him feel very grown up. Thank you Juan!

This 4 star rating can be summed up in two words. Happy Hour. I could drink their cucumber lemon press by the gallon and in fact probably have. (cucumber infused vodka, house lemonade, soda water) Get dollar oysters on the half shell, or splurge for the incredible Kumamotos. The peel and eat shrimp are great, as is the calamari. If you're there for dinner, get the blue crab cakes - they are amazing. The rest of the dinner menu is good but nothing special.

Don't forget your wallet... The service was great from Juan, but my husband wasn't a fan of the green gumbo. He's from down south (not to say that it had to taste like that, but he's familar with the taste profile) and it was overseasoned. The calamari was the bomb.com - definitely recommend that appetizer!

A perfect evening. We enjoyed Ft. Collins so much. We topped off our great day with an excellent dinner at Jax. Everything was excellent, the food, the service, the weather, sitting outside, just perfect. We started with Oysters Bienville, nice and spicy; 6 to an order for $12. I got a microbrew called Pateros Creek RPA and it was perfect complement to my food. The wife got a merlot, "The Rook" which she loved, very sophisticated flavor. I ordered the Colorado Bass ($21) and it was cooked perfectly, with crispy skin. The wife got the Blue Marlin that actually that night was Ono on ginger rice ($22). Loved it. Our server, Allie, was so warm and friendly. Plus she was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, the wines, and the beers. Ask for her, she is great. Next time we are in Ft. Collins we are heading straight for this restaurant!

I was in Fort Collins for the holidays and my family took me to Jax and I was extremely surprised and thrilled with the food. We went for Happy Hour and like many other reviewers on the site, I can agree when they all say that this is really what makes the place thrive! The prices are amazingly reasonable and the happy hour hours are reasonable, too. My favorite: my peel and eat shrimp-- so fantastic and I could probably eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The Happy Hour is definitely something that someone on a budget can afford (I, myself, am on a college budget and don't like spending more than $10-15 on a meal and you can do that here with the Happy Hour specials). The first time I went, I didn't have the greatest service (and I have worked in the restaurant industry so I was a bit surprised). The General Manager, Collin Randall, was fantastic at taking care of me! The second time we went to Jax, the service and food were unbelievable and they have certainly exceeded my expectations.

totally disappointed. I so wanted it to be good. Mushroom/scallop chowder was bland and tasteless. Halibut portion was way too small, ridiculously small. Calamari was good. In general we didn't love the menu, we both found our selves settling and not excited about ordering. I'm all about second chances, so IF I go again it will be for oysters and drinks. I'll pass on dinner.

My husband and family call this restaurant my "Happy Place". I love it! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and while I love Colorado (lived here now for over 20 years) and LOVE Fort Collins, I do miss my seafood. Happily, I don't have to fly back to San Francisco anymore to satisfy my craving! The oysters are fantastic, really like the peel and eat shrimp, and the Lobster sandwich is something that I find myself randomly thinking about here and there. The restaurant itself is warm and cozy and fun. The service is always great! We go here with a group of friends at least once a month and we always have a great meal and wonderful experience - THANKS!!! I also really appreciate that they support a lot of local farmers. And that I know exactly where my oysters are coming from....:)

I think I eat here 3-4 times a week. I absolutely love it!!! Happy hour is awesome. The oysters are super good too. The staff can answer just about any question you could ever have about their dishes and the fish and stuff....which is kind of scary... But cool. Highly recommended for seafood lovers. And probably food lovers in general

Fabulous addition to the community on many fronts. Excellent food, well prepared with depth and complexity while also taking fresh items simply presented. Service team is just that with a strong knowledge base of food & beverage. Great Happy Hour with tasting portions of many items! The best kitchen in FCC today.

I sat in the dimly lit booth at a table covered in white butcher paper with a small bowl of crayons enticing me to color some sort of ridiculous art work where my entree would later be placed. I was tempted to write "Feasting Fort Collins Was Here" but had better judgement than that in the middle of a review. We were next to a large window that gave me the perfect view out onto Old Town, watching people walk by on the beautiful warm autumn night. I tried to be engaged in the conversation, but the loud chatter of a very full restaurant echoed off of the exposed brick walls, making it difficult to keep up with the details of the story. For a moment, I forgot I was in Fort Collins and felt like I was in Denver. That is exactly what Jax Fish House brings to the Fort Collins food scene - the hip, fun, luscious, and spendy flavor of Denver. Jax Fish House (not to be confused with Jax Mercantile, Co.) brings us fresh seafood with a special knack for oysters and cocktails. Executive Chef, Sheila Lucero has an impressive culinary resume and an even more impressive dedication to quality. This is one of the few (if the only) kitchen staff that I know of taking a field trip to small Fort Collins farms to become familiar with our farmers, produce, community, and incorporating that in an ever changing seasonal menu. You want to support local food? Eat at Jax Fish House. The food at Jax Fish House elevates the standard for the Fort Collins restaurant industry, making our first steps to being more competitive with the likes of Boulder and Denver. I've always felt that there is no good reason that Fort Collins can't break free of the mediocre comfort zone and step it up. Jax is beginning to pave the way. It's fine fare in a trendy atmosphere with a price tag to go along with it. I believe they fill a void in our community that was more like a gaping hole. It's a fabulous place and I can't wait to go back - despite the lengthy wait that I'll be better prepared for next time.

As an east coaster, I have to say that I get easily turned off by midwest seafood restaurants, but this place was great! I came here on a Thursday night and sat at the bar since the tables were pretty full. We ordered a round of cucumber lemon presses (only $6!) which were delicious and refreshing. I switched to the pineapple ginger sling later and it wasn't as good. We wanted some snacks so we got the calamari with a lime chili sauce and mussels in a lemon and garlic sauce. The calamari was done perfectly - not chewy at all. The sauce was really good but definitely spicy. I liked it but people who are sensitive to that probably would have cried. The mussels were great, although a little small, but there was no bread! Maybe it's just an east coast thing, but mussels here are always served with crusty bread to soak up the broth. I asked for some and they gave it to me, but it was soft, untoasted wheat bread and it just wasn't the same. I would definitely come back here for more drinks or a full meal, the entire menu looked great!

The BF and I went to Jax last night for our anniversary. We knew it was going to be busy, and we were ready for a wait. We got there around 7 and were told the wait would be around an hour. The wait ended up being about an hour and a half, which wasn't a HUGE deal, since we had drinks at the bar. Obviously, any dining experience is more enjoyable without a huge wait, but that was kind of par for the course. We ordered the steamed mussels in the chorizo, tomato and cilantro sauce, which was just "ok". It was very standard, to me. For entrees, we ordered the ahi tuna and the scallops. They were both really good. Nothing "amazing" but, they were both good. We were NOT a fan of the Jax Standard drink (essentially a martini). But, that probably was just a matter of personal taste. Overall, we might come back, but probably only for happy hour.

Damn good. I'm from Cape Cod and have access to the best seafood, but was happy I came here. It's pricey, but lots of fun and everything was cooked to perfection. I ordered the trout- highly recommended, and had MD oysters with Sauv blanc

Great food, but even better was the service. After a big let down service-wise in another local eatery the evening before, we were thrilled with the attention and the personalities that took care of us here. The food was top notch as well. Only downside to the evening was the martinis were not cold enough.Definitely recommend dinner here though, just ask for a chilled glass if you order a martini.

Went for lunch on a saturday and was very disappointed. shrimp and corn chowder - gelatinous. lukewarm. needed salt badly. crab cake sliders - not terrible, but not great. the small buns were heavy in my gut, couldn't really taste the crab. small salad on plate - warm, somehow salty. (see comment on chowder.) dinner must be a lot better given the reviews here. just seemed like lunch isn't their thing and they mainly wanted to be open so folks would know they were there. service was fine, no complaints. overall a big blah.

Well Prepared Fresh Seafood! Right from the start Jax is one of the best restaurants in Fort Collins. An excellent raw bar with a wide selection of fresh oysters, innovative cocktails, nice variety of local beers & a creative wine list (many by the glass). Menu varies as to what is most fresh, but everything I've tasted is excellent!

My husband and I were very dissatisfied with the portion size of both our dinners. Not only do you not get a soup or salad included with your meal, the "side dish" that accompanies your entree isn't even large enough for a toddler. I ordered the Ahi Tuna which came with five pieces of fish, four small slices of potato, and some slivers of an apple. He had the Kale Crusted Bass that was paired with 6 small pieces of gnocci and his filet was the size of Mcdonalds fish sandwich patty. So after spending $80 on our dinner, we left still slightly hungry. Will not be coming back.

After a day hike up to the Horsetooth, I was walking by and stopped in on a whim for a cold brew. After a few FTs, I decided that I was hungry and inquired about the several varities of oysters that were displayed on the chalk board behind the bar. Thinking the worst (ordering oysters in Colorado? Surely not a good idea!), I decided to start off with cooked oysters just to be sure (rockafeller I think, or maybe it was bienville}. I really wasnt paying attention at that point and thirst was taking a higher proriority . All I know is that I told the bar tender to bring me the best oysters that they had in a baked or broiled form. The ones I got were spicey, rich, and awesome. Now that they had my attention I moved on to samplings of various raw on the half shell. The bartender explained the nuances of each variety as he served them up (this one tastes like the "ocean", this one is "earthy", this one is "sweet", blah, blah, blah). This kind of thing usually turns me off (die you foodie scum), but after tasting several varieties, I was on board with the program. I think I ended up eating 4 dozen oysters (in 1/2 dozen varital portions) and was totally blown away by the flavor profiles that I experienced. Price? It cost me a small fortune for a bunch of mud dwelling mollusks shipped in from more than a thousand miles away and drink a couple of beers, but it was well worth it. I tipped the bar tender heavily. Oh and although I live may live in Kansas, I have eaten multiple hundreds of oysters at Acme in NO and by the bushel right off the boat further down in Delacroix.

JAX is quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in Fort Collins. I have probably been there 10x already since they opened in June and am working my way through the menu -- I have not been disappointed yet. The service (especially if you sit at the bar) is top notch, and they were especially accommodating recently with a large group of 17 people we took to celebrate a birthday. The experience can get a little pricey; watch the up-sell on the "premium" oysters ($3/ea vs. $1/ea for the happy hour ones), as well as the amazing cocktails. These guys do it right, and I also agree with the other comments how much better (and cleaner) this place is than Fish. Be prepared for a wait most times, though. Enjoy!

Wow. Wow wow wow. Jax, you have proved me wrong and for once I don't wanna be proved right. I went here on a whim on a Thursday night with two of the most discriminating seafood eaters I know: One is a Japanese-trained career sushi chef that spent years on the east coast serving fish that was 6 hours (or sometimes less) out of the water; the other was a Washington State native who bought crabs on the dock. And then there is me, with my funny food texture phobias and extreme dislike of anything rubbery or mushy. We were supposed to be nightmare customers. All three of us left grinning like idiots, and not because we got our checks comped. They seated us by the marine tank, which made me happy because I am an aquarium nerd. So like a 4 year old, while waiting for our waiter I amused myself drawing a pajama cardinal fish with the provided giant crayons on the butcher paper they put on each table. It was awesome. My friends fired a ton of questions at the waiter, because my husband is allergic to dairy products AND shrimp AND lobster AND any crab except softshell (blue) crab. Our server took it all in perfect stride, offered suggestions, and said the kitchen can adapt almost everything which is always a relief. I have problems with certain restaurants that have basically refused to alter a dish because they claim it "compromises" something. If a dish can't stand on its own with the removal of something like a cream sauce or cheese crumbles, that dish probably isn't worth eating in the first place, or the kitchen staff has little ability beyond parroting the same process over and over which shows poor skill, poor training, and poor ingenuity. But I digress because that was NOT the case here. So my husband decided to go for the seared scallops and a single kumamoto oyster for an appetizer. My other friend grilled the guy on the crabs and said he would go for the fresh 3-crab combo at market price, which I believe that day was $39. I ordered the barramundi which came with sunchoke bisque, carmelized pears, wilted frisee and fried mashed potatoes. Our food came out within a reasonable amount of time for what we got. The dishes were simply beautiful. Everything had breathing space but the plates still looked well populated; very well balanced presentations for sure. I thought the composure and preparation of my dish was spectacular. The barramundi had crispy skin on top, tender flesh below. Cooked perfectly. Not rubbery or hard or mushy. No excessive "fishy" flavor. Simply seasoned; the cut of meat stood well on its own. The potatoes underneath were also simple. The sunchoke bisque pooled around everything and added a nice savory creamy flavor. The frisee which is usually somewhat bitter had been topped with the pears and give that side of the dish an aromatic, sweet profile without being overly fruity or sugary-tasting. Everything had a "clean" flavor, allowing each element to stand on its own as well as come together in a well composed dish. My company said similar things about their meals. Our crab-eater was just floored with the freshness and they gave him a LOT of legs to eat. He wound up having to take a few home. My husband said his scallops were also perfect: Seared crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside for just the right combination of textures. The dish also came with a few purple venus clams and fennel salad which gave the dish a beautiful color and presentation. It was truly a lovely plate to behold. We all shut up for a good few minutes while we treasured what was put before us, punctuating our eating with little more than "Oh my god" and "This is incredible." I was the first one to slam down my plate. I've been weight training and could eat my weight in food just about every day. Afterward I requested a dessert menu and went for the gluten free devil's food cake with salted caramel ice cream. For a gluten free cake, this thing was unbelievably moist and fluffly, not the usual dry, dense concoctions I have had at other places. The salted caramel ice cream was delicious and at the perfect temperature, around 38 degrees (not too hard, not pooling on the plate). The cake was just slightly cool and surrounded by chocolate and caramel sauces which were quickly mopped up by my cake. It was a huge dessert for $7 which was nice to see. I'd say although the menu looks pricey, the food is worth it. In my experience, good seafood is not cheap, nor is employing people who obviously have high respect for the food, which was obvious from our dishes' preparation and presentation. This is a great place for a somewhat special occasion, or when you have some money burning a hole in your pocket.

I am beyond happy that Fort Collins finally has a Jax Fish House, no more driving to Denver!!! Headed to Jax last Thursday to enjoy happy hour with a friend for our birthdays. We sat on the patio and had our server to ourselves for the couple of hours we were there. We got an a dozen of the happy hour oysters, the egg roll, mussels and calamari. Everything was fantastic. Drinks were great and our server was amazing. She was attentive and super nice. I cannot express how happy I am to have a Jax here and am excited to enjoy more great happy hours on the patio.

This my new favorite restaurant in Ft Collins! I was there with a party of about 12 and the manager came out to say hi and welcome. He gave us customized menus for a group I'm taking to Ft Collins this summer. Great attention to detail. Love this place! Can't wait to get back. Don't skip the appetizers, they are all great.

Went to Jax on a first date...and they did a fine job making the night enjoyable. We sat outside so I can't really comment on the decor etc...but Allie, our server was an absolute pro. On point descriptions and great recommendations...the calamari was perfectly sauteed for our app. I ordered the scallops and while cooked perfectly was a little overpriced at 22 dollars for the portion. My date had the mahi mahi special and it was moist and tasty, although a bit overdone on the cumin. Not quite on par with Oceanaire in Denver, but very enjoyable.

So I've been to Jax twice and had mixed results. The first time I had an amazing dinner starting with the $1 happy hour Oysters which were great. Cocktails were amazing especially the Pineapple infused martinis. Our entrees were great. I had the pork chops which were probably the best pork chops I've ever had and my friend had the marlin which she loved. The second visit I had to Jax wasn't as great. Oysters were great but alot more money since it wasn't happy hour. They no longer had the pork chops which was disappointing so I had the sweat tea chicken which was very dry and plain tasting. Cocktails were still good and service was great both times so I'm not automatically dismissing this place, I was just disappointed the second visit didn't live up to our first visit. I'll probably give it another shot.

Jax Fish House has a great location and atmosphere with many local attributes, which is appreciated by FOCO locals. I'm not one to order fish, unless I can smell the ocean, but my better half tells me it is good, and that is saying something when you are 1,000 miles from an ocean. I can say the appetizers, pork, chicken and beef are what you would expect from a top of the line restaurant. This beats many of the others in the area, hands down.

Big hype, big disappointment. The tables are very close together giving it a cafetiria feeling. They ran out of king crab legs and I had to order something else. My wife had the arctic char and thought it was "ok". Service was not the greatest. Definitely have to try the "I'm your huckleberry" cocktail - the one bright spot of our evening at Jax.

LOVED JAX!!!! Had a wonderful meal and loved the atmosphere! I ordered the Sockeye Salmon which was DELICIOUS!!! I also had oysters as an appetizer. Gave it several tries, but sadly the descent selection and good quality of the seafood cannot overcome the combination of consistently subpar service, and extremely noisy atmosphere (due to poor acoustic treatment) that leaves you just feeling annoyed if you are sitting inside.

  • Cheryl S.

The $24 entree had a very small portion and was not very good. My fish was served with slimy skin on, very unappetizing. It took forever for the waiter to refill our sodas. The a/c was not working and it was hot in the restaurant. We waited 30 minutes to be seated and had to stand the whole time in a very small waiting area.

We had heard about Jax Fish House in Fort Collins from our foodie friends who live there and when we were there for business this time we decided to give it a try. We're normally skeptical of seafood in landlocked states, but Jax definitely makes the grade. Jax has a hip upscale ambience with a lively bar scene so be prepared, it's not a quiet or dull restaurant. It's in the charming Old Town area of Fort Collins so a pre- or post-dinner stroll is nice. The menu is updated and creative, food quality was consistently great and attractively presented. We also appreciated the wine list with several well-priced options and there's a large selection of local craft beers. The menu emphasized fresh local ingredients as well as superb seafood and a raw bar. There are plenty of non-fish alternatives, but we went with fish for our appetizers and main courses. Every course was delicious, the ceviche special was particularly memorable. We also appreciated the team approach to service. Even though the place was hopping, we never felt neglected or rushed. The manager Kristi took the time to visit our table to make sure we were happy, which we were! Jax is now our top choice for dining in Fort Collins.
